Assignment (cognitive-based):  Knowing the terms around the notes on your page can be just as important as playing the right notes! The following terms are found in Vaughan Williams' English Folk Song Suite. Find the definitions for all of them. Choose three that you find in your own music and explain in 2 or 3 sentences why you think the composer used that specific term to describe the music. This assignment will be graded and you can refer to the rubric for details.

5-Excellent
Students show mastery of every term listed on their assignment. All definitions are given their correct general meaning. At least three definitions are chosen to describe their specific meanings in the music and demonstrate the students' knowledge of the term and application to the music. This is done in a thoughtful response that is more than one sentence long.

4-Good
Students show mastery of at least 9 of the 11 terms listed on their assignment. Most definitions are given their correct general meaning. At least three definitions are chosen to describe their specific meanings in the music and at least 2 of the three demonstrate the students' knowledge of the term and complete understanding of their application to the music. This is done in a coherent response that is more than one sentence long.

3-Fair
Students show mastery of at least 7 of the 11 terms listed on their assignment. Most definitions are given their correct general meaning. At least three definitions are chosen to describe their specific meanings in the music and at least 1 or 2 of them demonstrate the students' knowledge of the term and complete understanding of their application to the music. This is done in a coherent response that is more than on sentence long.

2-Unsatisfactory
Students show mastery of at least 5 of the 11 terms listed on their assignment. At least 2 definitions are chosen to describe their specific meanings in the music and at least 1 of them demonstrate the students' knowledge of the term and complete understanding of their application to the music. Sentences may be difficult to follow but some content is evident.

1-Failure
Students fail to complete assignment.
